It’s a type of ultrasound scan that uses vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) to measure the time it takes for sound waves to bounce back from your liver.
A FibroScan can help your doctor: Understand the condition of your liver, Identify how much liver damage you have, and Plan your treatment.
A FibroScan is painless and doesn’t break the skin or enter your body. You can usually go home or return to work immediately after the scan.

What is a Fibroscan?
FibroScan is a type of liver elastography. FibroScan is a special ultrasound technology that measures liver stiffness (hardness) and fatty changes in your liver. These measurements help your healthcare provider learn more about your liver disease.

A fibroscan is a simple, painless, non-invasive test that helps your healthcare professional understand the condition of your liver and if there is any scarring (fibrosis) present.
What to expect?
- You’ll lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head.
- A nurse will feel your tummy to find the right place to put the probe.
- The probe will send out sound waves in pulses.
- The scanner will measure the time it takes for the sound waves to bounce back.
- This process will be repeated at least 10 times.
- The scanner will calculate the average reading.
